What Is A Power Surge?

A power surge is a sudden, huge increase in voltage and current running through your power lines. Surges can be caused by a number of different things—a failed transformer or other parts of the distribution grid, severe weather damaging the public grid, or even a lightning strike hitting an electrical line or transmission tower. Whatever the case, a surge can cause immense and irreparable damage to your home’s electrical system in an instant, and with little to no warning before they hit, they’re a hidden threat that can strike at any point. However, you are not at the mercy of a surge: with a whole-home surge protection system, you can defend your home from these surges and prevent one of these potential disasters from ruining your home.

What Happens In A Power Surge?

During a power surge, your electrical lines and components will become overwhelmed with a sudden surge of electrical current and voltage. Electrical systems have a number of components and pieces of equipment that are designed to regulate voltage and keep it at a very consistent and even level, based on needs. During a surge, this number spikes for one of a number of different reasons, causing components to fail, circuits to blow out, and other serious damage to happen over a potentially wide area.

Some common causes of power surges include:

  • Overloading the public electrical grid (common during summer)
  • Storm damage
  • Lightning strikes
  • Power outages
  • Large electrical shorts or over-currents

Contrary to popular belief, surges are not exclusive only to public power lines and equipment outside your home—something inside your home can also cause a power surge. This is why we strongly advise using whole-home surge protection in combination with localized surge protection systems on your most important devices. For example, we advise using surge protection power strips with computers, data centers, servers, and expensive appliances that will cost a fortune to repair or replace.

How Surge Protection Works

Surge protection works sort of like a pressure release valve works on your water heater. These devices are essentially always keeping watch over how much current and power is entering your home through your main electrical panel. During a surge, when an excess of power flows through, the “release valve” begins to redirect the excess current, either rejecting it outright or safely disposing of it into an installed ground wire. This prevents the rest of your electrical system from becoming damaged by the surge. However, surge protection should be regularly inspected and even replaced—as it ages, it can lose its ability to protect and even prematurely trip, causing your power to shut off under use loads that are still considered “normal.”
