Can I Clean My Air Ducts Myself?

Here in Colorado, many of us use gas-forced central heating and air conditioning systems to heat and cool our homes. Along with a furnace and an air conditioner, your home also has ductwork weaving throughout.

As you work your way through your spring cleaning list, you might be washing the windows, changing out the bedding, and scrubbing every corner of your home. You’ve got the time while you’re staying in place – why not?

Can I Clean My Air Ducts Myself? But what about your ventilation system? Should you consider cleaning your air ducts? After all, if you have dust settling on your furniture, isn’t that a sign it’s coming from the air ducts every time your furnace operates? Surely a good cleaning will do some good?

Your ventilation system is part of a sealed system that helps your HVAC system operate. When installed correctly, and when operating properly, your HVAC system won’t add to the dust currently in your home.

If you haven’t changed your air filter lately, now is the time. Installing new air filters regularly pick up small particles of dust, pollen, and other pollutants, ensuring they don’t mix with your air supply. An air filter is one of the most economical ways you can ensure costly problems in the future.

As a DIY project, it also benefits you to use your vacuum and a dust cloth to keep grills and registers clean too. Unscrew the grills and give them a good cleaning. Use your vacuum to remove and dust or debris located just beyond the registers. However, avoid sticking a long attachment down into the ductwork, as that can potentially cause problems.

Focus on what you can see. And pay attention to what you find. While a thin layer of dust is perfectly normal, watch for more serious issues, like mold, stains, or rodent droppings. If you find anything unusual, call in one of our HVAC technicians for a closer look.
